WWI monument

Another shot of the WWI monument in the Edmond Michelet roundabout.

Park statue

Another shot of the entrance to le parc de la Colombière.

The other people in the park must have thought I was insane because, in order to get this angle, I kept having to set the timer on the camera and then hold the tripod high above my head. Rinse and repeat until desired composition was achieved.

See the forest through the trees

Sometimes you... well... you just have to look up.

Taken at le parc de la Colombière.

The most beautiful path in my kingdom

Le parc de la Colombière, in Dijon, France. Louis XIV said of this main path through the 16th century park - spanning nearly 82 acres and containing 6000 trees - that it was "la plus belle allée de mon royaume."

(All pictures taken today will be dedicated to Hank and Val, the wonderful couple from New York with whom I had the great pleasure to spend a part of this beautiful afternoon.)

La Chapelle stained glass

Stained glass windows inside la Chapelle cathedral.

(For the record, this is another example of how HDR imaging can, and should, be used without anyone even knowing you did it. Without tone-mapping of multiple photos, it would have been nearly impossible to capture all of the detail and fine color gradation in the stained glass while still being able to make out all of the great stone work.)

Pêcheur à la ligne

Kind old man sitting on the bank of the canal, fishing. He had a wonderful accent which I couldn't possibly begin to wrap my ear around.

(yes, I DID ask his permission to take this photo!)

Moment de détente

Wonderful Sunday afternoon. This guy = happy guy.

(P.S. My challenge today was to shoot only with my 50mm f/1.8 lens. I met the challenge, and I was reminded that this was the best Benjamin I ever spent on photography.)

The Doors

I tried to find an old, classic, weathered door in a warm color (red, orange, yellow) to offset the blue and green ones, but had no luck finding one. I stopped and talked with a couple women about it, and they informed me that people in France don't usually have the right to paint anything facing the road just any color they wish. Go figure.

Hong Kong street at night

One of the main streets just outside of the conference center where ICPhS 2011 was held. Hong Kong: busy, as always!

Cool shades

HDR image of Ryan's cool shades in Hong Kong. If you look closely, you can see me, Erin, and Annie taking pictures in the lenses... pretty meta, right?

Hong Kong cityscape

This was the view of Kowloon, Hong Kong, that greeted us after a long hike up a tree-covered hill while we had the afternoon off from conference duties.

Hong Kong night cityscape

Okay... not France, I realize... but still travel appropriate.

This is the view from my hotel room in Hong Kong while I was there for ICPhS 2011.

Palais des Ducs facade, round 2

Thanks to help and inspiration from deviantART member djoldjife, I decided to try to push myself further with HDR work. Here's another attempt at an HDR of the bracketed photos I used for "Palais des Ducs facade".

Fountains in front of le Palais des Ducs

Wonderful summer day in front of the city center. Can't beat public fountains, sunny skies, and incredible architecture.

Architecture & Sunsets

Quickly becoming my two favorite aspects of Dijon.

Dijon - 08/11/11

(NB: This was an incredibly difficult HDR image, for some reason. If you notice bizarre color aberrations around edges and in shadows... go make a sandwich or something.)

Place Darcy, sunset

One of the local hotspots in Dijon, at the peak of the color of the sunset. I had to wait for all the traffic to pass through, run out into the street, get my shots, then run back before getting flattened by the next round of crazy drivers.

Place de la Libération, sunset

Technical issues aside (as well as the trash cans!), this is one of my favorite photos I've made... ever.

(I made an error yesterday: it's "Place de la Libération", not "Place de la Liberté")

Place du Théâtre

The good thing about a wide-angle lens is that it can capture a very large angle of view.

The bad thing about a wide-angle lens is that it fails to fully capture the grandeur of scenes like this. Walking down this street was breathtaking.

Sunset from my apartment window

I took this pic while I was having a beer with my landlord and talking about work, politics, and other aspects of life.

Surreal. This is my life.
